A glimpse of something better

Did you notice it? After a period of global instability and division, it feels like Australian democracy has just shown us a glimpse of what’s possible. It was an orderly, if at times uninspired, election campaign. Last week, it ended with a thoughtful and gracious concession speech. There is also cause for hope in the measured tone of a PM who seems determined to act with respect and humility in the face of a thumping win.

What matters now is how effectively politicians from all parties can work together to build an inclusive community and make our lives better. And for that to happen we all have to play a part.

For things to change for the better we need to start with non-partisan media outlets that are interested in an open discussion of the big challenges such as climate change, the cost of living, housing, artificial intelligence and a rebalancing geopolitical order.

At The Conversation, we work exclusively with academics to produce journalism that is sober, clear and useful. Our focus is serving readers with the evidence we need to make informed decisions, and we refuse to turn up the dial on conflict to win cheap attention.

We give away all of our journalism for free to readers and republishers. Instead of building a paywall, we depend on the kindness of people like you who understand the ways in which sharing knowledge can bring us together.

That is why I’m asking that you please donate to our annual campaign, which launched last week. In past years we’ve been inspired by your generous support and today we hope that you can please make a gift of whatever you can afford for 2025.

Next year, with your help, we’d like to connect with thousands more people who get their information online. Everyone should have access to the facts, not just a privileged few.

If there was ever a time to support a project that brings people together and strengthens our democracy, it is now. Every tax-deductible donation counts, so please donate today.
