Budget-friendly ways to update your bathroom

Whether you’re thinking about selling your home or simply want to breathe new life into your property so that you can enjoy it for years to come, the bathroom is a great place to start. It’s a functional part of the house that everybody will use and, for some, can even be a peaceful retreat from the stressors of daily life. The good news is that refreshing the room doesn’t need to break the bank, either. In fact, there are plenty of affordable and simple options to improve the look and feel of your bathroom.

Update the furniture

Okay, so replacing the shower, bath, toilet, and basin might cause costs to spiral, and perhaps these changes aren't essential anyways. However, alternatives such as investing in new accessories such as cupboards, mirrors, and even toilet brush holders won’t hit the bank as hard and can majorly change the feel and appearance of the space. Perhaps you want to change the colour scheme or maybe you want to opt for a different aesthetic: whether you're seeking a more classic, antiquated look or a modern, sophisticated style, there’s a whole host of hardware options for a variety of budgets.

What's more, with accessories that customise bathrooms, generally it only takes a few screws to put them in place too. It might not cost much, but by revamping these smaller elements considerately, you can achieve a great impact. Take a look at your local thrift shops or online marketplaces for secondhand pieces and consider some DIY upholstering or sanding, painting or stripping to enhance your finds and make them suitable for your vision.

Get creative

Start small. Rusty screws in the mirror? Replace them. Signs of wear and tear in your cabinet? Whip out the super glue.

Another major one: if the sealant around your shower or bath is looking a little worse for wear, or maybe mould and mildew has begun to grow by the sink, you need a little elbow grease! Begin by giving the area a deep clean to get rid of any grime. Once dry, use a bathroom silicone sealant to seal the joints between your bath, sink, shower and wall to protect against any fungus growing in the future. You might not think that replacing sealant would have much of an effect on the overall appearance, but with cracks sealed and mould removed, your bathroom will have a brand-new feel in no time. This is not only a move to improve hygiene but also a way to spruce up your bathroom in a subtle but impactful manner.

Paint the walls

It's amazing how much you can transform the look of your home with a little helping hand of some paint, and the bathroom is no different. You might want to keep it simple with white or perhaps use bold on-trend colours to really spice your space up. You’re not just restricted to the walls either as you could also consider investing in furniture paint and giving doors, cupboards and even bathroom tiles a new colour.

Invest in new fixtures

In the same way that new cushions and soft furnishings can have a big impact on your living space, new fixtures such as door handles and taps can hugely improve your bathroom. While you can purchase your own items, you might want to consider hiring a reputable plumber to carry out the job for you. The job itself will only take an hour or so to complete but it will be totally worth it and is a simple way to give old-fashioned sinks a modern look.
