Hot water systems - which type is best?

If you need to upgrade or replace your hot water system, you may know that it is not as simple as you initially believed. Picking the right hot water system can be complicated as various factors determine which option is best for you. If you need assistance, consider this guide to help you find out about hot water systems and which type is best.

Types of Hot Water Systems

Knowing the different types of hot water systems can help you find out which is best. These types are:

Electric

Electric is cheap to install but more expensive to run and it can increase your carbon footprint.

Heat pump

Heat pumps are more economical and efficient, with three times better efficiency than electric heaters.

Gas

Gas systems are ideal if you have an existing gas setup within your property as it is cheaper to operate and install when you compare these heaters to electric counterparts.

Solar

Solar hot water systems are the most expensive in terms of the initial cost. But, since you are not using electricity from the grid (instead generating your own), they become more affordable over time, and eventually, the panels will pay for themselves.

Storage Tank vs. Instant Water Heater

It is also worth understanding the difference between storage tanks and instant water heaters and how these will benefit your home.

Storage tank

A storage tank is perfect for large households of four or more people. This is because the tank holds the water and heats it, allowing you to use it at will, even if the system is off. However, the larger the tank, the longer it can take water to heat up, so you may need to wait if the hot water runs out.

Instant water heater

An instant water heater provides immediate and continuous hot water whenever you need it. This is ideal for running the tap to wash the dishes or take a shower. But, they are only appropriate for smaller households since you must install them close to water sources.

Running Costs

Each option brings with it varying running costs. As mentioned above, electric heaters are the most expensive, but you should consider additional factors. These factors include the efficiency of your unit, the size of your household, and even your climate or location.

Rebates Or Incentives

Some hot water systems are available alongside rebates or incentives from the government. This option is a fantastic way to upgrade your current system without the considerable cost outlay you may need to pay without government support. Typically, these rebates or incentives focus on sustainable practices, and you may feel encouraged to replace your environmentally damaging system with one that uses renewable energy. However, there may be some drawbacks depending on where you live and how easy it is to install solar panels or other systems.

Arguably, there is no such thing as the best hot water system, as all households have various needs. This guide should have given you a good overview of your options, so you can now speak to a licensed plumber about your hot water system needs and choose the system that appeals most to you and suits your lifestyle.
